According to the Toronto Sun, Adam Lambert has just confirmed that he will be joining the legendary band Queen as its new lead singer for an upcoming tour this summer.

During Lambert's season of 'American Idol', the singer was joined by Queen's original group members Brian May and Roger Taylor for his finale performance. The threesome came together again this past November to perform at the MTV European Music Awards. The performances led to widespread rumors that Lambert would take on the lead role of the group, replacing the band's original frontman, the late Freddie Mercury

Last December, Taylor said Lambert "... has grown into a really great performer with an astonishing voice... We would like to work with him again. There's nothing signed just yet but we're talking about live dates."

In Lambert's official confirmation, he also announced that the upcoming tour would include a stop in  Knebworth, England, the site of Mercury's last performance with the group in 1986. Mercury died five years later in 1991.

In an interview with Britain's Daily Star, Lambert shared,  "The intention is to pay tribute to Freddie and the band by singing some f--king great songs. It’s to keep the music alive for the fans and give it an energy that Freddie would have been proud of. After the EMAs, I heard faint little slithers of a backlash from people saying: ‘You can’t replace Freddie Mercury.’ But I already knew that. There’s no intention in my mind of replacing Freddie. That’s impossible. The way I’m choosing to view it is that it’s a great honour and one I’m in no way going to shirk... Being asked to front Queen is the best thing that can possibly happen."
