Jazz Singer, Activist, and Actress Abbey Lincoln Dies at Age 80

Abbey Lincoln, accomplished jazz singer, actress, and civil rights activist, died at age 80 in New York City, according to The New York Times.  Her death was announced by brother Donald Wooldridge.

Some of Lincoln's many albums included "Affair ... a Story of a Girl in Love," "That's Him," "The World is Falling Down," and "Abbey Sings Abbey." Lincoln received the National Endowment for the Arts NEA Jazz Masters Award in 2003.

She also appeared in films such as "The Girl Can't Help It," "Nothing But a Man," and "For the Love of Ivy," for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actress. She also made guest appearances television shows including "All in the Family," "Marcus Welby, M.D.," and "The Name of the Game."

Lincoln was married to drummer Max Roach, but the couple divorced. She is survived by her brothers Donald and Kenneth, and sister JuAnita Baker.
